Mail (MX) Hosting Report
July 1st, 2020

Report Description
This report details the major mail hosting providers. This includes both ISPs as well as specialty mail service providers.

Methodology
Each month we issue MX record queries to determine where the mail servers are located for every domain in our web server survey. We then take a look at all the responses received across the entire survey and categorize's each MX record as being either

  • Hosted by an ISP or specialty service provider;
  • Self Hosted
  • Unknown - unable to categorize in one of the first two choices.
If a mail server residing on an IP address has fewer than 10 domains on it, we consider the mail server and its domains to be self hosted. If more than 75% of the MX record hostnames resolving to a given IP address share the same base domain name (e.g. the MX record aspmx5.googlemail.com would have a base domain name of googlemail.com), we consider all MX records that resolve to that IP address to be serviced by the organization owning the base domain name.

If a domain's MX record doesn't fit into either of the above categories, it is classified as Unknown.

Note: Readers are cautioned that the Growth percentages are based on a server's market share penetration rather than the absolute number of servers we detected. Thus, it is possible for the number of servers to increase, while the growth is actually a negative value.
