This was due to dojox.xmpp.util.xmlEncode only encoding the first occurrence of each character, not all of them. For Debian 8 Jessie, this problem has been fixed in version 1.10.2+dfsg-1+deb8u2. We recommend that you upgrade your dojo packages.
