Balanced Web Servers by DNS
The report is organized by DNS Server, with each DNS server listing the associated web servers for which it is responsible. By ordering the report in this fashion, one can quickly distinguish between virtual hosting companies, where many host names employ load balancing, all referenced from the same DNS server, and individual organizations that run their own DNS servers and where there are only a handful of hostnames being resolved by them.
Analysis of this data suggests that those DNS Servers that are serving requests for more than 10 hostnames using load balancing are in all likelihood hosting companies that are providing web services to various organizations. DNS Servers that are serving requests for less than 10 hostnames using load balancing are likely organizations that have set up their own DNS servers and load balancing solutions in house.
In the last month (201801), we resolved the names of 85417855 sites, and determined that 3716918 sites had their names resolve to multiple IP addresses. Your report will list these servers, the signature, any alias name, and the list of IPs to which each server resolved.
While the exact number of DNS servers involved varies from month to month, a specific example is the December 2001 report where we detected 6,568 different DNS servers that served out load balancing requests for 171,003 different web sites.
