Web Bug Spy

What is this

Web bugs are objects (images, iframes, etc.) that are imbedded in the page of a web site that cause part of the web page to be retrieved from a site different than the one the user was visiting. In the process, this second web site gets to know that you visited the original web site.

Each month our general crawlers visit several million web sites and index the web bugs that have been found on these sites. This activity is designed to visit all sites in our database roughly once a year. As such, in any given month, we visit only ~10% of the sites in our survey. To present a complete data set, when you issue a query against our web bug database, you are actually querying 12 distinct months worth of web bug data, with the relevant month we crawled the site shown in each returned record.

What is it used for?

You can use this service to determine:

What web sites are using a given on-line advertising agency.
What web sites are using the services of a particular web analystics service (traffic counters).
What sites are imbedding content on their site from any given source.
Finding related sites. Sometimes operators of sites will references images, stylesheets, or other embedded objects from a single central site. Searching on that will yield all the other sites that we find bugged in the same fashion.
