What is this

Phone numbers in the 10 digit format, known as NANP (North American Numbering Plan) will consist of an area code followed by a 7 digit number. When our crawlers find a phone number in this format, we record it and make it available here, as well as producing our monthly telephone area code report.

Phone numbers have historically been tied to geographic locations. A given area code, for example, will not cross state boundaries, so searching for a given area code (e.g. Toronto's 416/647 area codes) will yield businesses/organizations/individuals geographically located in the given area.

Captured as part of this data set are toll free numbers (800/888/877/866) and pay-per-call numbers (900) that are less constrained geographically.

What is it used for?

You can use this service to determine:

companies with a web presence in your geographical area.
companies offering pay-per-call services.
companies with multiple offices

Methodology

Each month our general crawlers visit several million web sites and index the phone numbers that have been found on these sites. Our crawlers are designed to crawl the web roughly once a year, and as such we visit ~10% of the sites in our survey each month. When you issue a query using this interface, you are querying data recorded during the last 12 months.
